Chairperson of the National Students' Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) Sizwe Nxasana has resigned.
Nxasana steps down at a time when NSFAS is facing challenges relating to the allocation of allowances to students and payments backlogs from 2017 and 2018.
Professor at the Stellenbosch University Professor Jonathan Jansen says the announcement by former president Jacob Zuma about free education has added to the complications that Nsfas is facing.
The announcement by former president Zuma last year ahead of the ANC elective conference caused havoc for Nsfas because you can't make that kind of announcement without thinking about the consequences for the administration of the massive loan system.— Professor Jonathan Jansen, Stellenbosch University
The debate about free higher education has been going on forever and within the ruling party, this has been a hot potato. But when the president made that announcement shortly before universities opened, it caused chaos.— Professor Jonathan Jansen, Stellenbosch University
Professor Jansen says Nxasana is one of the most competent executives one would find in this country.
