Proposed Tobacco Bill puts 180 000 jobs at risk - JTI

Japan Tobacco International says the proposed tobacco bill infringes on people's freedom of choice and threatens jobs.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi publicly made known his plans to further clamp down on smoking.

This will include having plain packaging for tobacco products as well as increasing limits on places where people can light up.

Bongani Mshibe of the Japan Tobacco International says the proposed Tobacco Bill will lead to excessive regulation.

We saw some of these proposals globally and it really does threaten some of the business's commercial freedom, not only for tobacco companies but also for retailers and small businesses which supports 180 000 jobs in the country.

Mshibe says the proposed bill also infringes on the consumer's freedom of choice.

Really, the consumer freedom of choice is threatened because adults should have a freedom of choice in terms of how they want to live their lives.
