Herron: Allegations facing CPT transport authority misreported as corruption

The DA's federal executive will on Sunday meet to consider Patricia de Lille's submission on why she should keep her job as Cape Town mayor.

City manager Achmat Ebrahim and Transport Commissioner Melissa Whitehead also face a battle to keep their positions.

This follows a City-commissioned report into claims of maladministration and tender irregularities within the city's transport authority.

The City's MayCo member for Transport, Brett Herron, says that allegations facing the city's transport authority are being misreported as corruption.

Herron says that, as a political head, his direct involvement in the transport contracts has been limited.

He argues that he has never had any reason to doubt Whitehead's conduct.

I hope once the investigations are concluded, it will be clear that if anyone has committed any offence, it would be of a technical nature.

Brett Herron, MayCo member for Transport

I don't think there is any reason to ask me to resign and I hope that I am not asked to resign.

Brett Herron, MayCo member for Transport

These are allegations. They need to be tested.

Brett Herron, MayCo member for Transport

I'm not here to defend Melissa Whitehead, I'm here to try correct the perception that the transport directorate is rife with corruption.

Brett Herron, MayCo member for Transport

Even if these allegations are true, none of them amount to corruption as far as I can see.

We must question why a report, widely distributed in 2015, surfaces now.
