No clarity on claims of Zimbabwe coup

There have been mixed reports about claims of a coup in Zimbabwe.

A military convoy has been seen heading towards Harare, less than a day after the head of the military said he could 'step in' to end President Mugabe's 'purge' of opponents.

Clayson Monyela, head of public policy at Department of International Relations, says it’s a difficult to know what is going on because the Zimbabwean government hasn’t confirmed anything.

We are monitoring the situation closely and we are getting regular updates from our team in Zimbabwe.

Monyela could not verify if there are any troop movements in Harare, adding that South Africa cannot lead the communications without verification from the neighbouring country.

He said there are no warnings issued for South Africans either working or visiting Zimbabawe.

Peta Thornycroft, veteran Zimbabwean journalist, says there is no untoward activity in the troubled country.

Thornycroft says people were excited by four armed personal carriers.
