A new law limits total garnishment to 25% of a debtor’s basic income.
“Garnishment” refers to the attachment of your salary by a creditor.
This comes after a Constitutional Court judgement favouring the Stellenbosch University Legal Aid Clinic.
The case followed action by Wendy Appelbaum after finding that up to 80% of her employees’ salaries was being deducted to pay their debts.
