"Molefe showed no remorse"

The Daily Maverick's investigative unit Scorpio is in possession of newly leaked emails indicating that former CEO Brian Molefe started planning his cushy retirement nest egg at least as early as a year before, in November 2015.

According to AmaBhungane journalist Pauli van Wyk, the emails show a conversation between Eskom and Eskom's pension fund PPF about Molefe's pension.

She says the emails shows exactly what transpired at Eskom with regards to Molefe's confusing retirement, retrenchment and at some point unpaid leave.

The emails shows the chronology of exactly what happened because South Africans were mostly confused.

Van Wyk says Molefe was employed by Eskom on a fixed five-year contract. The emails reveal that someone from HR was already inquiring about Molefe's pension.

A certain Anton Minnaar tweaked the factors used to calculate pension funds which in the end amounted to R30.1 million, says van Wyk.

In a telephonic conversation with Molefe he admitted that he did a preliminary inquiry about his pension fund.

He showed no remorse...Molefe said the only mistake he made was to think that he could retire at age 50.

Aside from that, it appears he has no memory of any other payouts.

According to Molefe he can't remember any other bonuses he received from Eskom or annual remunerations that he received two days after Thuli Madonsela published her damning state capture report.

Eskom's spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe says the matter of retrenchment or reinstatement of Brian Molefe is with the courts and cannot be commented on further. He says Eskom will take its queue from the courts.

I am afraid I am not in a position to confirm or deny any of the reports. This is a matter that Eskom is taking very seriously especially at board level.

Khulu Phasiwe, Spokesperson

He added that when Eskom releases results on Wednesday, it will "have something to say" about this matter.
